Ensign Broderick

In the bedrooms of his youth.

Ensign Broderick is an inspiration. Before being an artist, business man and style guru, he is just an awesome dude. Multifaceted, and complex - he is a family man, was once a hockey dad and is partially responsible for the iconic Sam the Record Man sign.

I first met Jason Sniderman (Ensign’s birth name), I had been working with his wife, interior designer Karen Gable - and she told me her husband was a musician. She described his work to me and I was immediately intrigued. Jason and I met over a coffee, and I remember him showing up in an LA Lakers jersey. He told me a bit about his past, and besides the fact that his Dad was a cultural icon in Toronto, Jason had an super interesting past I was immediately drawn to. He gave me his first album of songs, intimate and infectious, I was immediately hooked. Rich visual imagery for the project immediately flooded to mind.

Jason had been working with Toronto painter, Kris Knight and had accumulated visual representations for individual tracks. He was looking for someone to bring it all together, and to visualize and create an album package for his initial releases. Something that would have continuity, grab peoples attention, and tell the story of his alter ego, one that seemed to have been born in his teenage years - in his the bedrooms of his youth.

We created the album package for Ranger, which he self released on a limited run. And subsequently Feast of Panthers, which was ultimately released by Toronto label, Six Shooter Records, shortly after Jason turned 59.

We are all better off that Ensign Broderick’s music is now in the world for us to hear. He is about to release is 3rd full length album, Blood Crush.
